elephant

In 1986, Dan Harrison ( see picture above ) was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University.
On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Dan approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant’s foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Dan worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Dan stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.

Dan never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Dan was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenage son.
As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Dan and his son Dan Jr. were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Dan, lifted its front foot off the ground, and then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Dan couldn’t help wondering if this was the same elephant.
Dan summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Dan’s legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn’t the same elephant.

Delia Derbyshire in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop
A hidden hoard of recordings made by the electronic music pioneer behind the Doctor Who theme has been revealed - including a dance track 20 years ahead of its time.

Delia Derbyshire (delia-derbyshire.org) was working in the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop in 1963 when she was given the score for a theme tune to a new science fiction series.

She turned those dots on a page into the swirling, shimmering Doctor Who title music - although it is the score’s author, Ron Grainer, who is credited as the composer.

Urban Collectables burnt out vehicles - cars burnt in France

As I live in France I am something of an expert on the subject of burnt out vehicles. These little Urban Collectables are really great.
Rather than give your son false hopes of one day being able to drive a luxury sports car or shiny speed demon with a set of Hot Wheels toy cars, give him a harsh dose of the real world with a $50 Urban Collectable instead.

Yes, it’s time to stomp on little Tommy’s foolish dreams of polishing a red Ferrari or weaving through traffic in a Porsche. His chances of becoming a well-adjusted adult and contributing member of society are much greater if he can imagine the events leading up to the creation of the joyridden 2-door hatchback, petrol-bombed jeep, and minivan/insurance scam.

I am particularly fond of dark screen backgrounds as they give good contrast to any icons on your screen. Here is a home grown one as I cleaned up the fallen leaves in the garden a few weeks ago.

In the early 1930’s, a farmer and his wife went to a fair. The farmer was fascinated by the airplanes and asked a pilot how much a ride would cost.

“$10 for 3 minutes,” replied the pilot. “That’s too much,” said the farmer.

The pilot thought for a second and then said, “I’ll make you a deal. If you and your wife ride for 3 minutes without uttering a sound, the ride will be free. But if you make a sound, you’ll have to pay $10.”

The farmer and his wife agreed and went for a wild ride. After they landed, the pilot said to the farmer, “I want to congratulate you for not making a sound. You are a brave man.”

“Maybe so,” said the farmer, “But I gotta tell ya, I almost screamed when my wife fell out.”
